Southern Georgian Bay OPP marine officers were busy on the water recently, checking numerous vessels and charging three people.

From Aug. 12 to 20, officers checked 49 vessels in the areas of Tiny, Tay and Georgian Bay townships and the harbours in Midland and Penetanguishene.

Police responded to 12 calls for service, including careless boating complaints, assisting in a robbery investigation after a suspect attempted to evade officers on land by entering the water, unwanted persons on Georgian Bay Islands National Park property, abandoned vessels, mental health intervention calls, young people on rafts who were blown off shore by strong wind along the Tiny shoreline, and speeding.

Two vessel operators were charged for life-jacket offences and a 69-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., man was charged for operating at night with no lights near Mermaid Island, Honey Harbour.
