One person killed in 'serious' Elmvale-area crash: OPP (update)

SIU invoked its mandate in the fatal crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon and shut down roads for several hours

Update (9:33 a.m.): The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released more details this morning about Wednesday afternoon's fatal crash in the Elmvale area. 

The SIU's preliminary information indicates an Ontario Provincial Police officer was driving southbound on Crossland Road when she was passed by a vehicle travelling at a "high rate of speed."

The officer began following the vehicle, but lost sight of it. 

The officer then came across it a short while later in a field on Crossland Road, between Flos Road 11 and Tiny/Flos Townline Road. 

The SIU says the male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and a female passenger was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

One investigator and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

ORIGINAL STORY

One person was killed and another injured in a "serious" single-vehicle crash near the Springwater-Tiny municipal border Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened on Crossland Road between Flos Road 11 and the Tiny/Flos Townline Road at about 2:40 p.m. yesterday.

According to a media release issued by the Southern Georgian Bay OPP this morning, the vehicle had two occupants at the time of the crash. The release notes one of the occupants was pronounced deceased the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital via ambulance.

Police say the roadway was reopened at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

According the release, the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information.

The release did not disclose why the SIU had become involved.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
