Thousands of charges laid leading up to Canada Day long weekend

Majority of charges were for speeding; one person died in boating incident on long weekend

Police laid thousands of charges on OPP-patrolled roads and waterways between June 21 and July 1.

Police laid 1,287 seatbelt-related charges, 96 charges for life-jacket and other marine safety equipment violations, and 34 charges for people not wearing helmets.

Charges were also laid for speeding (8,421), impaired driving (447), stunt driving (224) and distracted driving (173).

One person died in a boating incident over the Canada Day long weekend.
